We launched 3 Augmented Reality experiences on NASA’s Instagram account covering the topics: Solar Eclipse, Asteroid Bennu & the upcoming Artemis II lunar mission. The AR effects were also used by NASA scientists to create informative Instagram stories that provided a deeper dive into each topic.
In the Solar Safety effect, users could don their own pair of solar glasses while watching an interactive guide explaining their importance and proper use. They could then switch camera to view an interactive model of the sun, moon, and earth in their space, illustrating how these celestial bodies align to create an eclipse.
In the second effect, users can explore Asteroid Bennu and the OSIRIS-REx satellite, which conducted NASA's groundbreaking first asteroid sample return mission. Interactive hotspots provide detailed views and information about the mission, the satellite, and the various craters and extraction sites on Bennu.
The final effect guides users through the Artemis II mission, which will see the first woman and person of colour orbit the moon. The interactive mission map shows each stage of the journey, narrated by the mission's Recovery Lead. Users can switch views to get a closer look at the spacecraft and the various operations conducted during the mission.
